Lurdes Patrocínia Matavela Nakala, from Mozambique, completed master´s degree on Educational Studies at The University of Queensland, in Australia, in 2001. Currently, with sponsorship of FCT, she is a PhD student on multimedia in education at the University of Aveiro in Portugal, which is run by the Department of Communication and Art (DeCA) and the Department of Education and Psychology (DEP).

Professionally she became involved with Distance Education since 1994 at the Instituto de Aperfeiçoamento de Professores (IAP). The main task of the institution was to set up and deliver distance education programs for in service primary school teachers, nationwide. At IAP, she developed course materials for general and methodology subjects, as well as guides for program implementation. She served, as an instructional designer at the Instituto de Educação Aberta e à Distância (IEDA) which replaced IAP in 2000. From 2003 to 2007 she was a task force member of the Instituto Nacional de Educação à Distância (INED). From 2007 up to date she serves INED and she was the Head of the Directorate of Accreditation and Training Services.

Her research interest area includes quality assurance public policies for distance learning, accreditation process, institutional audit and program review.
